Haus of Gloi review

I’ve heard of Haus of Gloi from friends for a little over a year now, but was hesitant to order, because I already have a massive addiction to BPAL and didn’t need more smellies to lust after. Well, last week I caved.

Ordering:
The site is well set out, aesthetically pleasing, and easy to shop. There’s lots of pictures (dear gods, I am lusting after the pretty soaps), clear descriptions of the scents, and sample sized offerings of the oils.

Packaging and Shipping:

My sample vials arrived in a small cloth bag, and were well padded with plenty of brown paper (yay for environmentally conscious packing!). The owners included a handwritten note, as well as a piece of candy! Shipping was incredibly fast, and I was updated with a tracking number.

Scents:
Absinthe-The Gloi interpretation of the fae vert! Hauntingly herbal. Wormwood and anise swim in a creamy green sea of lemon balm, green lemon, soft glowing mints, a hefty lump of sugar and the tiniest drop of suggestive deep green moss.

My thoughts: Woah, that’s some serious anise! It smells very similar to the last bottle of absinthe I had. On my skin, the anise softens, and I can make out mint, lemon, and sweetness. It has fairly good throw, and lasted about 4 hours before I needed to re-apply. It’s a very different scent-not foodie, and not something for everyday, but for a night out? Perfect.

Apothecary-Old books, bubbling concoctions, herbs and creaking floor boards! A pure essential oil blend of: Lemongrass, rosemary, blood cedar, sweet basil, lavender and the tiniest drop of vetiver.

My thoughts: Out of the bottle, it’s sharp and bright, almost astringent. On my skin, again, it settles. I can smell lemongrass and rosemary the most, with a hint of lavender in the back. It’s like sitting next to a herb garden on a sunny day! Gorgeous. After an hour or two, the rosemary is much stronger, switching with the lemongrass.

Depravity – A bewitching ladies boudoir! Pure corruption: clove, nutmeg lurk amongst the sweetest offerings of coconut, on a bed of rich golden amber, laden with a dusting of sandalwood and spilled wine.

My thoughts: Oh, that’s sexy! The coconut is at the front of this blend and sweet, but it’s not so sweet that it goes into sugary. The amber and sandalwood keep it from smelling like candy, and on my skin, the clove is nowhere to be found. I’m ok with this, as I didn’t want to smell like coconut rice pudding! It sticks close to my skin without a lot of throw, and doesn’t last very long, unfortunately. I like it, and wish it would stick around longer.

Haus Amber-Rich and sultry amber, our own hand blended accord.
My thoughts: I love you! I’m a huge fan of amber. I keep pieces of the resin in my clothing drawers, and it’s the main base note of many of my favourite scents. Haus Amber is everything I love about an amber blend. Rich and deep, with a touch of sweetness, but not so sweet as to lose the depth of the scent. Amber is usually a skin scent on me, and this is no exception unless I slather it on. I need a big bottle of this. Maybe three. Or six. (What. I don’t have a problem. My amber addiction isn’t out of control. Shush.) You may want to wear this as a scent locket, though, as it does stain skin a little.

Honey Tree-Quite rich! Right from the bee hive – honey amplified by seductive essence of resinous vanilla, darkened by a passing waft of mild rare wood smoke.

My thoughts: Sweet and clear honey in the vial with a little bit of an edge. I’m assuming that’s from the vanilla. On my skin, I have no idea what happened, but it turned into slightly sweet cat pee. :/ Yay for odd body chemistry-I may try at a different point in the month and see if it smells better/different then. But for now, I’m not loving it.

Lavender Sugar (free sample)-Bulgarian and French lavenders with a heaping spoonful of pure muscadovo sugar

My thoughts: Holy lavender bitch-slap, Batman! That’s pretty much pure lavender in the vial, and while the sugar does make it a bit less “ZOMG LAVENDER”, it’s still pretty potent. I have issued with the scent, as it triggers some unpleasant memories, but a friend of mine who loves lavender says that it is wonderful!

Litchi Milk Tea-Tart lychee fruit and black tea met with a splash of coconut milk.

My thoughts: It smells *just like* my favourite boba (bubble) tea! I wanted to lick my wrist while I was wearing it, and my fiance even commented on how good I smelled! I honestly was shocked that I liked it as well as I did, because I’m not normally a fan of foodie scents. This is almost candy-sweet, but not cloying, and on me it has a moderate amount of throw. Again, I need a bottle of this.

Madcap Garden-A lively blend, pure black tea chilled with peppermint and the tiniest spike of sweet honey. Very unisex, stimulating, addictive, and bright.

My thoughts: This is a delicious summer scent…it’s light, the mint makes it refreshing and keeps the honey from getting to be too much. I’ve tried it on my fiance, and on him it morphs into a delicious honey and tea scent. I’ve actually had to steal my wee sample vial back out of his bathroom! Two bottles of this are in my future…so he’ll stop stealing mine!

White Peach-Reverie collection (free sample)-Cream, pale peach skin and ginger root.

My thoughts:

Wow, that’s sweet and peachy. Definitely foodie, and while it’s not a candy sweetness, it’s a bit too much for me. I do get a tiny bit of ginger from it, so it’s true to the description! It’s just not for me.

Customer Service:

There was a small issue with my order. I contacted their CS, and was told that they were sorry that they hadn’t shipped one of my vials, and sent it out the next day with a second bonus sample scent! Thanks, guys! Excellent customer service is the best way to keep me coming back to a company, and yours is excellent!

I loved several of the scents I picked up and will be buying bottles (and soaps and scrubs and…) of the ones that worked for me.

Pur Minerals aned NuMe are on HauteLook today!

I love Pur Minerals, and own several of their eyeshadows and a lipstick or two. I’m planning to pick up Pressed Mineral Eye Shadow in Fawn Fayelite, Plum Slate, and Smokey Quartz, and maybe the Under Control Mattifying Gel. They are also plenty of other choices to check out!

They also have some amazing styling tools from NuMe Style Hair Tools. I have one of their mini hair straighteners, and I adore it. It works well, and is small enough that I can take it on the road with me. There are straighteners that are on sale right now for as low as $55!

May 2013 Ipsy Bag Review!

Ipsy is a beauty box subscription. Each month costs $10, shipping included, and you get between 4-5 full sized or deluxe sized item in each bag. I’ve been subscribed for about 4 months now, and I’ve loved almost all of the items I’ve received!

Bag cost…$2?

The bag is cute, with a really bright and summer-y feeling Missoni style chevron pattern. The material is a bit thin, and feels like last month’s bag.

Mirabella Colour Sheers Lipstick
.11 oz, cost $22(?!)

I received this lipstick in Posy, which is a lovely light pink on my lips. It applies smoothly, and feels more like a lipgloss to me. If I had to compare it to a mainstream brand, it’s maybe a bit like one of Revlon’s Lip Butters? I don’t find it very moisturizing, though. Definitely not a repeat but for me.

Juice Beauty Reflecting Gloss
.14 oz, cost $7.50

Wow. So, this is my new favourite lipgloss. It’s not sticky, moisturizing, and I love love love the colour! Also, when I went to the Juice Beauty site, I was shocked to find out that we only received a sample size of this gloss at .14 oz. The full size is double that! Definitely a keeper.

Zoya nail polish 15ml, cost $8

I adore Zoya. They’re 5-free, and have some amazing colours in their line. I’m lusting after the Pixiedusts (glittery sand textured polish) so badly! I got a full sized bottle of Blu, which is a pastel blue from a 2013 spring line.

YABY concealer size-one small pot, cost 4.85

Meh. I was sent this tiny pot in Buff, which is too dark for my very white, very Irish skin. I’ve been using it as a primer for eyeshadow instead, and it does a decent job at that. Not something I’d be interested in buying again though.

St. Tropez Instant Glow Body Lotion-Travel size – 50ml cost, $6

Nope. Have I mentioned that I am very very pale? Because I am. And, despite what the media seems to think, I want to stay that way! This got sent to my Swap Box for later, as I can’t think of anyone I’d want to give it to, and don’t see myself ever using it.

Urban Decay’s Moondust Eyeshadow
.05 oz, cost $20

This was a bonus sent to some ipsy members for either winning a facebook contest, or for being active on their site! I recieved Glitter Rock, and I’m loving it. While it’s hella shimmery/glittery, it’s actually really wearable, especially as an eyeliner. I used Fyrinnae’s Pixie Epoxy, and it held up well with little fallout.

Total value of my bag: $70.35

Not bad at all for $10! I’ll be buying another bag next month.

Did you get this month’s bag? What did you think of it?

Influencer’s Sugar and Spice Voxbox Review

I recieved my first VoxBox from Influenster last month, and here’s my review of the box and it’s contents!

I would have taken a picture of the belVita Breakfast Biscuit package included in the box, but they’re long gone. The biscuits I received were the Cinnamon Brown Sugar flavour, and they were delicious! To me, they tasted a bit like a cinnamon sugar graham cracker. I had them for breakfast one morning, and while I’m not sure about the claims of it giving you more energy, it definitely kept me from feeling too hungry between meals. I’ve bought this a few times since I first got my VoxBox, and recommend trying the apple flavour as well!

There were several Colgate Optic White items, a toothbrush, the new mouthwash, and a tube of toothpaste. I’m going to be honest (hey, that’s what this blog is about) about the mouthwash. It tastes disgusting. Like, really, really bad. I’ve rinsed with straight hydrogen peroxide before, and it tastes similar to that, only with a slight mint taste that doesn’t manage to disguise how bad the mouthwash is. Sorry, Colgate, but I’m going to be sticking with Scope and/or Listerine. The toothpaste, on the other hand, is awesome. IT has a great taste, leaves my mouth feeling clean and a bit tingly, and I have noticed my teeth becoming noticeably whiter over the last month. The toothbrush is nice, but I prefer one of the automatic type ones, as I feel it does a better job.

The Nectresse Sweetener by Splenda was an interesting change. This sweetener comes from monk fruit, and one packet is the equivalent of two teaspoons of sugar. (My box came with 40 packets!) I’ve been trying to cut down on the amount of sugar I consume, and this was an interesting change from the agave nectar I’ve been using. I tried it in my coffee, hot tea, and a few batches of sun tea, and it added a light sweetness. I didn’t notice any odd aftertaste either. I do wish it was a slightly less processed product, but it is something I will pick up again once I am out of my sample!

Vaseline Spray and Go lotion was a new product to me! I love how easy it was to apply, and it was really easily absorbed into my skin. It’s become my go-to lotion for just after I get out of the shower because of how light it is and because it won’t stain my clothes if I get a little impatient and get dressed before it’s completely sunk in. My fiance also really likes it. He has very dry skin on his back, and I usually put lotion on him a few nights a week before bed. The Spray and Go lotion is his new favourite, because he doesn’t have to wait forever for it to absorb before he can go to sleep.

My favourite item out of this box has to be the Dickinson’s Original Witch Hazel Oil Controlling Towelettes. I’m a bit of a hippie, so I’ve used witch hazel before and don’t mind the smell, which is a bit astringent. I wish that there was some way to package them in a more environmentally friendly way, but sometimes you have to make compromises and the individual packets make it so convenient! I loved how clean the wipes made my face feel, and they’re great for freshening up or for removing makeup. If you live in the South like me, try tossing them in your fridge! It’s such a refreshing feeling, especially after coming in from a hot and humid day.

Overall, I like almost all of the products in my VoxBox! Thank you so much, Influenster, for providing them to me in exchange for an honest review!

Products were provided for free by Influenster and the respective companies for review. Opinions are entirely my own and were not influenced in any way.

Review: Bath and Body Works Beautiful Day Fragrance Mist

BBW's Beautiful DayWhile I’m not normally a fan of commercial fragrances (I have sensitivities to some scents, so I tend to stick with BPAL and other oil based perfumes), Bath and Body Works Fragrance Mists are one of the few that I can use without getting an instant migraine or nausea.

I picked up a bottle of Beautiful Day during my last trip to BBW during their Buy 3, Get 3 free sale, and I’m really loving it.
